Social Media Censorship

We all know the story. For the past few years, major social media companies (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) have censored Americans for questioning the Regime’s narratives about the 2020 election, the COVID-19 vaccine, and much more.

During January 2021, many Americans woke up to the fact of social media censorship after Big Tech banned Donald Trump.

First off, Social Media giants banned less-mainstream political commentators like Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, Gavin McInnes, Roger Stone, and others from their platforms during mid-to-late 2010s. This censorship didn’t bother many people because these bans didn’t affect the more mainstream conservative political commentators. That all changed once Twitter and company banned the then-sitting President of the United States Donald J Trump.

After Trump’s ban, many right-wing Americans sought alternative social media platforms. The search began for social media companies that uphold free speech.

Two major players in the free speech arms race are Gettr and Gab. Personally, I hadn’t heard about either of these companies until fairly recently. However, they both made headlines in the news recently.

For this post, I’ll first explain a little bit about these social media platforms. Then, I’ll state why one platform is a legit free speech platform and the other isn’t.

What is Gab?

Gab and Gettr were advertised as “free speech social media platforms”. These platforms marketed their services primarily to conservatives, libertarians, and anyone else who cares about free speech.

Christian tech entrepreneur Andrew Torba founded Gab in 2016. Torba’s social media platform exists as a free speech alternative to the major social media companies Facebook and Twitter.

Gab

Here is Gab’s own viewpoint on free speech:  political speech that is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution will be allowed on the platform. Illegal activity, threats of violence, doxxing, pornography, child exploitation, and spam are not allowed on Gab.

Gab is quite open and honest about its free speech policy. It claims to only ban a select class of speech not protected by the 1st Amendment, but it doesn’t regulate political speech on its platform.

Sadly, our Tech overlords, news media, and government have sought to smear and destroy Gab. For example, Apple and Google banned Gab’s app from their app stores for “hate speech”. Also, payment processors and financial companies blacklisted Gab from using their services. Truly corporate intimidation.

Just look up Gab on Google or Wikipedia. You’ll see how Gab gets smeared as a “right-wing extremist, anti-Semitic platform”. Truly, our corporate leaders despise the freedom of those who don’t bow down to the media’s narratives.

What a pysop!

In spite of all the opposition, Gab has achieved a fair amount of success. Millions of users have joined the platform, and many major figures have used/endorsed this platform (including President Trump).

At the end of the day, Gab is a free speech social media site! Gab is not backed by foreign money. It does not ban political speech or “hate speech”. Gab is undoubtedly committed to free speech. It helps that Gab also possesses a variety of solid features too.

Gab has a lot going for it. With that being said, let’s move on to the other social media platform: Gettr.

What is Gettr?

Gettr launched in July 2021 as a “free speech alternative” to Twitter. Founder and former Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller specifically marketed his social media platform to conservatives ever since the product launched. In fact, I first learned about Gettr through Steve Bannon’s show War Room Pandemic.

Gettr

A shady part of Gettr’s rise stems from its ties to fugitive Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui. Jason Miller claimed that Gettr received initial funding from Wengui’s family foundation but didn’t provide much more detail than that. Wengui also has close business connections with Steve Bannon–Miller’s acquaintance and big-time promoter of Gettr.

Essentially, here’s red flag #1 for Gettr: it has significant connections to foreign influence/foreign money.

Additionally, Gettr is not the “free speech platform” it proports to be. In recent weeks, several political commentators–such as Elijah Schaeffer and Tim Pool–have called out Gettr for its blatant censorship on its platform.

Here’s a clip of Jason Miller’s recent appearance on Tim Pool’s YouTube show. Suffice to say he didn’t do the best job defending Gettr’s policies.

Tim Pool and Elijah Schaeffer both pointed out how Gettr recently banned a conservative commentator on its website.

When Elijah Schaeffer asked Gettr for an explanation of the ban, the platform “shadow-banned” Schaeffer’s account and didn’t answer how the banned user violated Gettr’s terms of service. Here is a tweet from Schaeffer about the situation.

Moreover, there is evidence to suggest that Gettr does not value user privacy. According to a report from Talk Liberation, Gettr utilizes many of the same trackers that Big Tech companies use in Gettr’s own app. The company also uses Amazon AWS as its cloud service provider.

In short, all of the information I’ve found so far calls into question Gettr’s commitment to free speech.

Will the Real Free Speech Platform Please Stand up?

The overall goal of this post was to show why I believe that Gab is the superior free speech platform. However, this post touches on a larger point too.

In my brief time as a political junkie, I’ve learned that there a lot of grifters in politics–including in the conservative movement. If there’s an opportunity to make a quick buck off red-blooded Americans, then you’ll find people willing to take advantage of sincere patriots.

Gettr is a prime example of a right-wing grift. For context, a “grift” is just a method of deceitfully making money.

Gettr has convinced people that is a platform committed to free speech. The reality is that Gettr is no different than Twitter or Facebook. It bans users for political speech.

Anyways, I hope you gained some new insight from this post. Thank you for reading and stay classy!
