The Tin Can Conservative

A Patriot's Musings on Culture, History, Politics, and Faith

A Trip to Baylor

This past week, I took a little trip to Waco, Texas. What was the reason for my visit? Baylor University’s Turning Point USA Chapter hosted Charlie Kirk for his third stop on his “Exposing Critical Racism Tour”.

Throughout October and November 2021, Charlie is making stops at eight different American Universities for this speaking tour. The goal for Charlie’s “Expose Critical Racism Tour” is to discuss and inform attendees about the dangers associated with Critical Race Theory (CRT).

For background, CRT became a broadly well-known theory among the conservative movement in 2020. Although CRT has existed for decades, most people had never heard of CRT before the George Floyd riots during the Summer of 2020.

Once people started learning about CRT last year, a lot of pushback ensued. Consequently, many conservative voters, politicians, and pundits have sought to roll back this disgusting, anti-white ideology.

For example, many conservative parents have attended school board meetings to ban CRT in their children’s school.

The pushback against CRT has been a necessary 1st step in fixing our education system and our country.

I went on a little tangent there, so I will now discuss my experience at this TP USA event.

The Event Itself

Moving onto the event, my TP USA chapter–TCU–brought a decent-sized group to the event. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive from TCU/Fort Worth to Waco (for those unfamiliar with the North Texas region).

Since all TCU students had Thursday and Friday off for Fall Break, going to Waco on a Wednesday night was more of a feasible trip. The event ended fairly late, so it helped not having to wake up for class the next day.

For the speech itself, Charlie Kirk spent about 45 minutes discussing CRT and other alarming trends in the culture. This speech was more about playing “defense” in the Culture Wars. I found that aspect of the speech intriguing since much of TP USA’s work is about playing “offense” in the Culture Wars.

Charlie also made several several comments throughout his speech. I highly recommend watching the whole speech to catch what Charlie said. For instance, Charlie quoted Aristotle–who said the two elements of a decaying society are apathy and tolerance. Dang, that single quote hits home because it basically encapsulates the spirit of America in 2021.

Also, Charlie made some pretty socially conservative comments that got me fired up in the middle of his speech.

Overall, Charlie Kirk is a gifted orator, and I’m glad that I had the chance to hear him give another speech live.

My Question during the Q&A

After Charlie Kirk finished his speech, he answered questions during a lengthy audience Q&A session.

Fortunately, I summoned the courage to go ask Charlie a question at the beginning of the Q&A. Here’s a basic paraphrase of my question: “How does the conservative go from being an “anti-left” movement to actually conserving something?”

Charlie answered my question by stating what conservatives need to focus on actually conserving: the natural American family and the American Christian Church. Without those two foundations, American conservatism will only shift in the wind.

Here is the part of the video livestream where I asked Charlie my question:
